Pettes Memorial Library was designed by architect George D. Story, who was based in Newport, Vermont:

Born: 22 September 22, 1832, in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Essex County, Massachusetts, USA.

Died:  August 29, 1916 (age 83) in Waterbury, Washington County, Vermont, USA;

Buried: He was later buried in the Beebe Cemetery at Beebe Junction, Stanstead, Quebec, Canada.

After his first wife Kate E Lovett died in 1864, he married Canadian Celestia A. Rexford from Magog in 1867.

Story lived and worked in Newport, Vermont, USA, just eight kilometres from the Quebec border.

From 1884-86, he was active in the partnership of Story & Spear, Architects. He practised under his own name in Newport from about  1888 until 1910.

George D. Story is an extraordinary example of how professionals worked across the US-Canada border in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
